Hello friends!
I hope the good Lord is keeping you and your families well! In our home; we continue to count his blessings one by one; and we are thankful to God for every one of them!
In this post, I continue to share with you my DIY landscaping projects. In June I started working on the small bed around the porch and I want to share with you the step-by-step progress.
The project is quite tough, but when you pace yourself, it is doable! I did it, so can you. Follow these steps:
Step 1.
Prepare the ground
Just like in the other projects, i started by digging out the extra digging. However, at the first attempt the ground was so dry and hard! Even my African digging skills couldn't help me out. I had to water the ground every day for 3 days to soften work area. Again, I wheeled the dirt to the backyard.
Step 2.
Buy your plants
When the ground prep is complete, it is time to shop for your desired shrubs. Remember to make your choice according to your planting zone; soil drainage; sun/shade exposure.
I went with the FIRECHIEF ARBORVITAE and DANICA ARBORVITAE They are both evergreen and will not need any trimming.
Step 3.
Dig the holes
Dig a hole twice as wide and as deep as the root ball,
If you have clay soil, you can amend it with either garden soil or top soil.
Step 4.
Plant your shrubs
Loosen the roots, Place the shrub in the hole. Position the shrub ensuring the top of the root ball is level with or slightly above the surrounding soil. Avoid burying the base of the stem, as this can lead to rot.
Step 5.
Water thoroughly
Water the newly planted shrub deeply, ensuring the soil is thoroughly saturated.
Be sure to water the shrubs regularly especially during the first few weeks to help them establish a strong root system.
The next step would be ground cover. I'm still going back and forth on whether I use rocks or mulch. I am also considering adding a manicured arborvitae to the right end for some height; and some edge pavers.
As of now, I have a layer of sand over the dirt. And I continue to water them twice a day (morning and evening) unless it rains.
Stay tuned for the updates!
Peace be with you!
