4th of July WEEKEND AT HOME
Hello friends;
Thank you for dropping by again! I hope you had a fun filled 4th of July weekend with friends and family! We had a blast and I want to share the highlights with you.
It is was my weekend off work which made it super exciting! As a working mom, I love it when I get to send a couple off days in a row with my son! Oh I know he enjoys them as well! These are the days we make elaborate meals and we sit at the dining table rather than the usual kitchen table/island we use on the work/school days. Want a taste of of my famous breakfast casserole, drop by my house on my weekend off!
I took Friday off so we could have 3 whole days together! On Friday evening, we went to community park; enjoyed live music and a little bit of the fireworks. We didn't stay long because dear son became overstimulated with the loud blasts.
But Saturday was redemption day. Instead of just being the two of us, my nieces came over to spend Saturday with us. It was so wonderful! My son enjoys the attention they give him and I enjoy any opportunity I get to improve my hosting skills.
There visit was spontaneous on their part. There mom (my sister) being at work, they were bored and they decided to come spend the day at our home.
The good thing about having a lived-in home; you are not afraid to have company over at anytime. When they called and asked if they could come; my response was; "you are always welcome!".
I know not so many people are equipped have company over on such short notice either because your house is messy or you just dont know what you're going to do to keep them entertained. With these tips; you to can be ready to host at anytime.
How to keep spontaneous guests entertained:
1. Don't try so much. Involve them in whatever you had planned for that day. It's something they wouldn't have been doing, they get to do/experience it at your home. They'll enjoy it.
2. Good food adds fun to any gathering. Have a quick trusted delicious go-to menu you opt to for days like this. They may forget everything, but they'll remember that food food.
3. You can turn any time of the day movie night or game night.
4. Conversation. For many every just sitting down to just talk about "this and that" is enough!
For my party of 3 this is how the day went for us. They came in during the mid morning; I only had to plan for lunch and dinner.
For lunch I quickly defrosted some boneless chicken thighs; fried them for chicken sandwiches. Tip: if you want the perfect chicken sandwich; use the thigh
I was taking my son to the water park that afternoon so we all went. The heat index was in the triple digits which made it a perfect day to cool off. We're usually there for 1 hour, but this time we were there for 2 hours. The lad didn't even ask for more time as he normally does when its time to go. Everyone had so much fun.
When got home, I served them some cold watermelon; my pickie eater had his mandarins; and I had ice cream. Then it was time to start dinner.
Saturdays are movie afternoons/nights for me. I'd already picked out what I wanted to watch but decided to re-watch The Quiet Man; a 1952 classic starring John Wayne and Maureen O'Hara! I knew the girls would like it; and they did!
Dinner was delicious: Loaded mashed potatoes, baked spare ribs and broccoli.
There was enough to send my sister some!
I enjoy having people over for simple get-togethers. It was a lovely day; and I'm looking forward to many more days like this.
